about

Sekai (‘world’ in Japanese) is a nomadic storytelling project exploring the ever-evolving question: what does it mean to live a meaningful life?

How it started

While walking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage in Japan, we found ourselves incredibly inspired by the people and places we connected with. Every day, we hiked for hours through this magical forest to ancient Shinto shrines, basically like walking into a Miyazaki film.  It was one of those trips that makes you feel…connected, alive.

For years, we had been pushing toward the dream of creating a feature documentary together, working through the resources, time, and effort it would take, not to mention the challenge of getting a film into the hands of the right people, like the Netflix execs or whoever.

So as we walked along the Kumano, we realized that we were done with that. We wanted to just make something.. To do the thing. And as we met incredibly kind locals, stood in awe under old growth cedars, and drank way too much coffee (thank you vending machines), a seed was planted. We decided to just start. Right where we were. We didn’t need a multi-year plan or access to the “perfect” person or a million dollar budget. We would share stories and conversations that have depth and meaning, and through this, we’d have a reason to connect with people who are exploring, creating, and doing things that inspire us, and hopefully you.

Through Project Sekai, we are recording interviews and creating films that we are proud of because, well, because this is what makes us feel alive. So we hope you enjoy as we investigate and grow and learn alongside you. Here’s to the exploration, here’s to getting out there and doing the thing.  Oh, and Netflix, if you happen to be reading this, we’re still here. Give us a call.
